Nyango & Binya

Nyango and Binya are the mascots designed to represent Morotai Island, North Maluku, Indonesia. Drawing inspiration from two of the island's iconic tourist attractions, the duo brings the spirit of Dodola Islands to life. Nyango, the Historian Gurango, embodies the rich history and cultural heritage of Big Dodola Island, while Binya, the cheerful angel bird, reflects the lively and welcoming nature of Small Dodola Island. Together, they invite visitors to explore the beauty and stories of Morotai, creating an engaging and memorable experience for all.

Nyango is a curious and adventurous gurango, a species of shark native in the Morotai, whose body is wrapped in traditional Morotai weaving patterns. Nyango's passion for history begins from his childhood. He dreams to work as a historian exploring and sharing the treasures and beauty of Morotai Island, a place he loves dearly. His mission is to inform both residents and visitors about the island's history while showcasing the remarkable and unique history of Morotai to the globe. He sets off on his adventures alongside Binya, his cheerful siblings.

The name Nyango refers to the traditional weaving of the island "Anyaman", and "gurango," which is the name of the blacktip shark.

Binya is a cheerful Bidadari bird with traditional Morotai weaving patterns wrapped around its body. The Birango family discovered Binya on Small Dodola Island, and they eventually adopted her as a sibling. Binya has always been a joyful person who makes everyone around her happy, even when she was a small child. Her plan is to highlight Morotai Island's grace and beauty in order to establish it as one of Sulawesi's premier natural tourism locations. Binya thinks that by bringing joy to everyone in the community, Morotai will grow into a peaceful and beautiful island.

The name Binya refers to "Bidadari Bird" which is the name of Binya species origin, and "Anyaman" which is the traditional weaving of the island.
